Noisette family papers, 1841-1958; (bulk, 1841-1873).

Correspondence, receipts, land transfers, conveyances, and other legal papers re children of French botanist Philip Stanislas Noisette and his slave, Celestine, with whom he migrated from Santo Domingo to Charleston in 1794. Consists chiefly of items associated with litigation re settlement of Alexander Noisette's estate, documenting difficulties of Charleston's free black community preceding and immediately following the Civil War. Legal documents include "Petition of A. Noisette and others," [ca. 1835], to the South Carolina House of Representatives, requesting that the children of P.S. Noisette be permitted to remain in the state as free people of color after manumission, with signatures of 27 prominent Charlestonians; deed, 11 Dec. 1841, re transfer of approximately sixteen acres on Charleston Neck from William Turpin, of Greenville, S.C., and Philadelphia, Pa., in trust to Dr. Elias Horlbeck, who financed the property on behalf of Alexander Noisette; annual emmendations to the document, 1842-1845, recording Noisette's payments to Horlbeck for the property; documents, 6 June 1859, Charleston, permitting Peggy Noisette, to leave South Carolina with her children, Philip, Margaret, and Celestine, and other family members; and 2 documents, 1 July 1859, Philadelphia, Pa., verifying identification papers and free status of Peggy and Louis Noisette, signed and sealed by Edmund Wilcox, Notary Public. Post-Civil War materials include documents re legal actions after the death of the intestate Alexander Noisette in an attempt to recover family funds believed to be held in trust by Siegling; affidavit, 28 Jan. 1867, Boise City, Idaho Territory, Lewis Noisette, granting power of attorney to his brother, Philip L. Noisette, to litigate against attorney A. Siegling of Charleston, S.C.; and deposition, 1 Feb. 1867, re lawsuit against Horlbeck and Ellen Noisette Dart, by eight Noisette family members. Twentieth-century items include correspondence and a reproduced newspaper clipping, 1958, re the contributions of Philip Stanislas Noisette to the cultivation of roses. Other correspondents include Elias Horlbeck, John Siegling, Edward W. Matthews, and J.B. Whistridge.
